The Tumi is a ceremonial knife made of bronze, gold, silver or copper and usually made of one piece, used during ceremonies to sacrifice an animal to honour the God Inti, the sun, was the Supreme God and the most important deity in the Inca Civilization.

The Tumis produced by the Lambayeque culture show an elaborated handle in the form of a Human Face traditionally identified as Naylamp, the first Lambayeque King, a hero named Ñam lap (Naylamp) arrived in the coast of Lambayeque bringing a green stone icon named Llampayec, legend states when Naylamp died he grew wings and flew away after his death he became a Mythological God, and the Tumis are decorated with green semiprecious stones in honourof Llampayec.  

Today the Tumi is the national symbol of Peru, and is a symbol of Good Luck. Many Peruvian homes have a large specimen hanging on the wall in the sitting room – in order to take care of their homes. The Tumi was adopted by the government of Peru as a symbol to promote tourism.
