HISTORY

Traditional Russian Matryoshka Nesting Dolls have captivated people around the world with their Intricate Designs, Rich History and Charming Appeal. These dolls, also known as Babushka Dolls, are a symbol of Russian Culture and Craftsmanship which began in the late 19th century where they were created by a Russian craftsman named Sergei Malyutin and painted by Vasily Zvyozdochkin, but inspired by a Japanese nesting doll, Malyutin sought to create a uniquely Russian version that would showcase the country’s rich Cultural Heritage.

 The result was a set of Wooden Dolls, each fitting perfectly inside the other, with the largest doll representing a Mother, or “Matryoshka” which means Mother or Matriarch in Russian.

The name was chosen to honour the importance of Motherhood and the central role of women in Russian society. The dolls were seen as a symbol of Fertility, Family, and the Interconnectedness of Generations.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Matryoshka Dolls is the symbolism behind the colours and patterns used in their design. Traditional Matryoshka Dolls are typically painted with vibrant colours, such as red, blue, and yellow. These colours represent different meanings in Russian culture. Red symbolizes love, passion, and beauty, while blue represents spirituality and wisdom. Yellow is associated with warmth, happiness, and prosperity.
