Indian Sandalwood,(also known as Chandan) is a small tropical tree and is the most commonly known source of Sandalwood.

The central part of the tree, the heartwood, is the only part of the tree that is used for its fragrance. Cutting of trees, even on private property, is regulated by the Forest Department, and the Indian government has banned the export of the species to cut the threat by over-harvesting.

The future of Sandalwood is threatened by over-exploitation and changes to habitat through altered land use, fire (to which this species is extremely sensitive) and agriculture. To keep this vulnerable resource from disappearing, legislation protects the species, and cultivation ideas are being researched and developed.
